It's for a number of reasons. It's a long story, involving Unisys and Compuserve, and a really screwed up patent system in the United States of America. Essentially, Unisys now want anyone and everyone using GIFs to pay a $5000 royalty fee.
We could fight this, but why bother? PNG is an opensource format (which means it's free), offers lossless compression (just like GIF), smaller file sizes, 32 bit colour (GIF supports 8 bit), multiple independent alpha channels, and a whole host of other cool features.
Browsers are only just starting to support the image, but it's going to take some pushing from the public, and we're trying to do our bit, because in the long run it will benefit us. The PNG group will probably do a much better job of convincing you than we have, so we urge you to browse their site and see what's up. There is even an extension for animated PNG files, so we can finally truly be rid of the GIF file format. And, finally, add your voice to the maelstrom by including the images at the bottom of this page on your own sites, and aiming for GIF free website.
